THE WHITE HOUSE

Statement by the President on the Shooting in Wisconsin

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin. At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded. My Administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family.

Four shot at gurudwara in US, two critical

Washington, Aug 5: At least four people were shot in an attack just after 10 a.m. Sunday at a Sikh gurudwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, just south of Milwaukee, according to US media reports. Two were in a critical condition in hospital.

A police SWAT team entered the building before noon and brought uninjured people out of the gurudwara at Howell Ave, the local Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

Among those who were shot was the president of the temple, it said.

People were in the gurudwara as early as 6.30 a.m. Sunday and many more were arriving for a service that was to begin about 11.30 a.m.

There were reports that children were taken to the building's basement after shots were fired, the Journal-Sentinel said.

Someone who sent a text message to a Journal Sentinel reporter shortly before noon said that there were two shooters with children possibly as hostages.

The head priest was locked inside a restroom with a cell phone and that there were as many as 20 to 30 victims, it said.

Two men have been admitted to Froedtert hospital, CNN reported citing a hospital spokesperson. One is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit and the other has been sent to an operating room.

CNN affiliate WTMJ reported that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple. The gunman may be on the loose, it said. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot....IANS
