U.S. Transportation Department shut down 270 truck-driving schools

The U.S. Department of Transportation has ordered the shutdown of 270 commercial truck-driving schools as part of a nationwide crackdown on alleged fraud and violations in the commercial driver’s license (CDL) training system.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the action on August 31, saying 110 schools were shut down over English-language proficiency violations, while another 160 schools were suspended for failing to meet federal training and facility requirements.
Federal officials said the 110 schools had trained roughly 5,000 drivers who were later cited for failing English-proficiency requirements. The other schools were accused of problems including inadequate testing space, unlicensed instructors and other failures to comply with DOT standards.
The operation involves the Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security, with support from the Department of Justice. Officials say the goal is to prevent fraudulent CDL training and ensure that commercial truck drivers meet federal safety requirements.
The latest action follows a broader federal effort to clean up the trucking industry. The Transportation Department has previously removed thousands of training providers from its national registry for suspected noncompliance, including falsified records and failures involving curriculum, facilities and instructor qualifications.
Federal officials said the crackdown is intended to improve road safety and ensure that only properly trained and qualified drivers are operating commercial vehicles on U.S. roads.
