NRI Yaditi Kava, a 39, received a shock when she was mistakenly charged a staggering £4,586 for just two hours of parking at Queensmere Observatory Shopping Centre’s multi-storey car park.
On May 16, Kava dined out with her two daughters following a shopping trip. With the pay station closed, she used her contactless card at the exit barrier and entered her PIN, misreading the display that showed “4,5”—thinking the fee was a standard £4.50. Moments later, a bank alert confirmed the erroneous £4,586
When Kava reported the incident on May 19, the centre’s manager acknowledged a machine error and assured her of a refund within a few days. Yet nearly three weeks passed before the full amount was finally returned.
Currently undergoing a divorce, Kava had saved the sum for legal expenses and considered canceling her daughter’s birthday celebration amid the ordeal.
Statements from Savills, the centre's management firm, described the incident as an “isolated incident,” reassuring customers that a refund had been processed and new safeguards were being introduced to prevent similar errors
