NRI Kash Patel has been confirmed as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following a narrow 51-49 Senate vote. Patel, a longtime critic of the agency, has vowed to rebuild public trust while navigating internal challenges and political scrutiny.
His confirmation was met with strong Republican support, while all Senate Democrats and two Republican senators—Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski—opposed his appointment, citing concerns over his political ties and lack of law enforcement experience.
Patel, 44, has dismissed allegations of political retribution and downplayed past controversial remarks about FBI investigations into former President Donald Trump. His confirmation was celebrated at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where he was praised as a much-needed reformer.
Taking office amid FBI leadership shake-ups and Justice Department investigations, Patel has pledged to restore confidence in the bureau, stating, “Let good cops be cops—and rebuild trust in the FBI.”
He replaces Christopher Wray, who resigned last month ahead of Trump's return to office. As Patel assumes leadership, the FBI faces mounting scrutiny, and his tenure is expected to bring significant changes to the agency.
