Top Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have opened an investigation into FBI Director Kash Patel’s recent travel, questioning whether he inappropriately used the agency’s Gulfstream jet for multiple personal outings.

According to several recent media reports cited by committee members, Patel allegedly used the FBI-owned Gulfstream aircraft for private trips, including a visit to Pennsylvania to watch his girlfriend perform at a college sporting event, a “date night” in Tennessee, and a social outing with friends in Texas.

In a letter sent to the FBI, Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California requested detailed records related to Patel’s flights. Their request includes travel itineraries, passenger lists, and any communication between Patel and individuals who accompanied him on these trips.

The lawmakers specifically questioned Patel’s Oct. 25 flight to Penn State University, where his girlfriend was singing at a wrestling match. “You traveled there because your girlfriend was performing, and afterward used the government aircraft to fly with her back to Nashville,” the Democrats wrote. “Your ‘date night’ had no apparent relevance to your official responsibilities.”

The inquiry also highlights Patel’s multi-day visit to San Angelo, Texas, first reported by the Wall Street Journal. During that trip, Patel was reportedly hosted by Republican donor Bubba Saulsbury at Boondoggle Ranch, a hunting resort that advertises itself as a place for “unnecessary or questionable projects,” the letter noted. The FBI has not yet commented on the investigation.

Committee Democrats say Patel’s travel patterns became evident through publicly available flight logs and social media posts made by Patel’s girlfriend. Their letter asks the FBI to provide documentation by December 15. However, as members of the minority party, Raskin and Kamlager-Dove lack subpoena power and can only formally request—not compel—the release of records.

“These planes do not belong to you,” the lawmakers wrote. “They are funded by the American people.”

This is not the first time Patel’s travel has drawn scrutiny. In May, CBS News reported that Senate Democrats requested a Government Accountability Office review of his use of the FBI jet. Although FBI directors are required to fly on government aircraft for both official and personal travel to maintain secure communications, they must reimburse the government at the rate of standard commercial airfare for personal trips. Family and friends may accompany them, but those costs must also be reimbursed.

CBS News also reported that Patel appears to have used the FBI’s Gulfstream V jet for trips to Las Vegas—where he owns a home—and to Nashville, where his girlfriend resides. Sources confirmed Patel’s presence on several flights tracked publicly, including a March 7 weekend trip to Las Vegas and a March 24 visit to Nashville.
