NRI Zohran Mamdani, 34, politician, has been elected as the new Mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment in the city’s political landscape. who previously served as a New York State Assemblyman, becomes the city’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and one of its youngest mayors.

- Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991in Kampala, Uganda.
- His mother is Mira Nair (an Indian-American filmmaker) and his father is Mahmood Mamdani (a noted academic). Both parents are of Indian origin.
- He moved with his family to New York City when he was about 7 years old.
- He attended public schools in NYC before earning his bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College.
- In 2018, he became a naturalised U.S. citizen.
- Prior to holding elected office, Mamdani worked as a housing/foreclosure-prevention counsellor in Queens, helping low-income homeowners and renters avoid eviction.
- He has described his identity as a blend of Ugandan, Indian, and New Yorker influences, which he says informs his view of social justice and community representation.
- In October 2024, he announced a campaign for Mayor of New York City for 2025. His platform emphasized affordability, rent freezes, fare-free transit initiatives and tax reform for high earners.
