Devinder Shory
declared victory in Calgary Northeast

NRI Devinder Shory, Conservative, Calgary Northeast
was the only riding in the city without an incumbent and was painted
as the riding to watch in Calgary by at least one analyst. But new
Conservative candidate Devinder Shory still managed to secure the
seat with 56 per cent of the vote.
Shory said he was never worried about his chances. "I've run
a hardworking, honest campaign," he said.
Shory ran on a family-first platform focused on justice and tax
reform, as well as improved day-care access.
An unsuccessful candidate for the Conservative party nomination
in Calgary Northeast said he's filed a complaint with Elections
Canada over the process that saw lawyer Devinder Shory win the battle.
Perry Cavanagh, who runs Hockey Calgary, narrowly lost to Shory
in a nomination vote last February to replace long-time MP Art Hanger.
He was born and raised in Punjab, India where he realized the huge
importance of education.
He said:
I was motivated to study and practice law, which remains my passion.
After the birth of our first son, my wife Neetu and I decided to
immigrate to Canada to make a better life for our family.
I started my new life in B.C. as a taxi driver, and then began
working in the home building industry. When the housing market crashed,
we lost everything and I understand the panic parents feel when
they suddenly can’t support their children.
Determined to pay my debts, I studied for and passed the Alberta
Bar exam and begin rebuilding our life in Calgary, where I practice
law today.
Having struggled myself, I now take great satisfaction from giving
back to our community; whether it is helping to raise almost $5
million for our North East Community Centre Society or working with
organizations to ensure that the rich ethnic diversity in our riding
is respected and represented.
We chose Calgary Northeast to raise our three wonderful children
and, as part of the Conservative team, I want to be your strong
voice in Ottawa. I want to help Stephen Harper continue his good
work to ensure safer streets, to make life more affordable for families
and to keep Canada on the right trac
