NRI  Pritam Singh, LOP, found guilty of lying in parliament

                NRI Pritam Singh, Secretary-General of the  Workers’ Party and Leader of the Opposition in Singapore’s Parliament, has been  convicted of lying to the parliamentary Committee of Privileges. He now has 14  days to appeal after sentencing. 
                This is Singapore’s first prosecution under  the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act. Singh faces up to three  years in jail and a fine of SGD 7,000 for each of the two charges. 
                The court ruled that Singh  "wilfully" misled the committee regarding false claims made by former  MP Raeesah Khan. Despite Singh’s testimony that he had advised Khan to correct  her statement, the judge found that he had instead supported maintaining the  lie. 
                Witness testimonies and evidence indicated  Singh did not take steps to rectify the falsehood in Parliament, strengthening  the prosecution’s case. 
His conviction is a major setback for the  Workers’ Party and could impact his political future, with potential  disqualification from Parliament depending on the final sentence.
