Indian Nationals Granted Access to Multiple Entry Schengen Visas with Extended Validity

In a significant development, the European Commission has introduced fresh regulations regarding the issuance of Schengen visas to Indian nationals. Effective April 18, 2024, these rules represent a departure from the conventional provisions outlined in the Visa Code, aiming to streamline the visa application process for Indian residents seeking Schengen visas in India.

Termed the "cascade" regime, this novel visa framework is designed to provide greater accessibility to visas with extended validity for individuals with a documented travel history, contingent upon passport validity. Under these revised regulations, Indian nationals can now obtain long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after successfully acquiring and utilizing two visas within the preceding three years. Subsequently, eligible visa holders may qualify for a five-year visa, subject to passport validity.

This decision reflects the European Commission's commitment to fostering closer ties with India under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility. By facilitating comprehensive collaboration on migration policy, the initiative underscores the importance of enhancing people-to-people contacts between the EU and India.

Schengen visas allow holders to travel freely within the Schengen area for short stays, with a maximum duration of 90 days within any 180-day period. While these visas are not tied to specific purposes, they do not confer the right to engage in employment.

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. These nations participate in the Schengen agreement, ensuring seamless travel across their respective territories.
