President Joe Biden's recent remarks have stirred controversy after he labeled close US ally Japan as "xenophobic" during a Washington, D.C., fundraiser. His comments, made at an off-camera event, also included India, Russia, and China in the same category. The president suggested that these countries would benefit economically from embracing immigration policies similar to those of the United States.

According to an official White House transcript, Biden attributed the economic challenges faced by China, Japan, Russia, and India to their alleged xenophobia, emphasizing their reluctance to welcome immigrants. While the initial report of Biden's comments did not mention India, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre clarified that the president was making a broader statement about the importance of immigration to the nation's identity.

Jean-Pierre highlighted the significance of the US-Japan relationship, describing it as "important" and "enduring," despite Biden's remarks. However, she did not confirm whether the president would continue to make similar comments in the future, stating that it was up to him.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby reiterated the value of Japan and India in addressing a range of issues and stressed Biden's appreciation for their contributions. He clarified that there had been no communication between the White House and the governments of Japan or India regarding Biden's remarks.

This is not the first time Biden has referred to Japan, China, and Russia as "xenophobic." In a previous interview, he expressed similar sentiments, suggesting a reluctance among these countries to embrace diversity.

The timing of Biden's critique of Japan is notable, considering his recent efforts to strengthen ties with the country. Just weeks before his remarks, he had hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a state visit, emphasizing the strength of the US-Japan alliance.

Japan has long grappled with a demographic crisis, leading to concerns about its workforce and economy. Unlike the United States, Japan and other East Asian nations have been hesitant to rely on immigration to address population decline.

Biden's comments come amid ongoing scrutiny of his administration's immigration policies, particularly in response to an influx of migrants. The president has faced criticism from Republicans over the handling of immigration issues, adding to the political pressure he currently faces.

Overall, Biden's remarks have sparked debate and raised questions about the implications for diplomatic relations with Japan and other countries mentioned.
