Thousands of NRIs & politicians throng to observe the first Barsi of Lahori Ram

 

Pittsburg, CA, Jan 17, 2009

On January 17, 2010 the Ram Family had the Bhog Ceremony for the Akhand Path held commemorating the first Barsi in memory of Mr. Lahori Ram. There were over 1500 people who came to pay their respect at the Shri Guru Ravidass Gurdwara Sahib, Pittsburg, CA. People attended the function from throughout the state of California and many other states from the United States. Family and friends came from Canada, England, Australia, Fiji Islands, India, and Germany.



Many political officials came to remember their friend, Lahori Ram, and spend time with the bereaved family:

Congressman John Garamendi for the 10th District - He said that a major part of his victory for Congress is due to the Ram family. He has known Mr. Ram for many years and presented the Ram family with a memorial celebrating the 1st memorial of Mr. Lahori Ram that has been made a permanent record of the US Congressional history.

Congressman Jerry McNerney from the 11th District: He said that this was the first time ever he has visited a Sikh Temple. He thanked the Ram family for inviting him and being a part of the political system here in CA.

Attorney General Jerry Brown - Candidate for Governor for the state of CA. He said that Lahori Ram was a great friend that always challenged him to be a active member representing the Indo-American community in the state of CA.

Assemblyman Dave Jones for the 9th Assembly District - Candidate for Insurance Commissioner for CA - He said that he has never seen so many Indo-Americans in one place. He congratulated the Ram family in organizing such a great event.

Kamala Devi Harris District Attorney for the County of San Francisco - Candidate for Attorney General for the state of CA - She said the Mr. Ram was an inspiration for her in her career in politics. Many first generation Indians like Mr. Ram and her mother always pushed her to be a part of the American political process.

Ash Kalra, City Councilman for San Jose - He said that the Ram family has helped him become who he is. Mr. Ram was a role model for him.

Kashmir Gill, Mayor of Yuba City - Kash said that when has was a child, Mr. Lahori Ram led him into political thinking. Mr. Ram's leadership in bringing Indo-American children thinking that they are a part of CA was very influential for Kash.

Sonny Dhaliwal, Vice Mayor of Lathrop - Praised the Ram family for celebrating the life of Mr. Lahori Ram. He said that it was great pride for him and the community that the family gave a chance to the entire community to come and remember their friend

Many community leaders also attended the program: Didar S. Bains, Baljit S. Mann, Charanjit Baath, Surjit S. Tut, Harry Gill. Ranjit Gill, Mr. Hundal from England, Dr. Harmesh, O.P. Bailley, Gary Grewal, uncle of MLA Jassi Khangura, and members of Gurdwara Sahib Rio Linda, Fremont, Tracy, San Jose, El Sobrante, Hayward, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, and members of Indus Valley of Chamber of Commerce.
