Piyush Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of DBS Bank, has been appointed as an Alternate Member of the Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA), further strengthening the intersection between corporate leadership and public service in Singapore.
The appointment, which took effect recently, was made by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam under the authority vested in the Presidency. Gupta joins the council in an alternate capacity, providing advisory support on key national matters, including fiscal policy and the safeguarding of Singapore’s past reserves.
The Council of Presidential Advisers plays a critical constitutional role in Singapore’s governance framework. It advises the President on key decisions, including the use of financial reserves, appointments to key public offices, and certain legislative matters. Alternate Members are called upon when full members are unavailable, ensuring the continuity and robustness of counsel provided to the President.
Gupta, who has led DBS since 2009, is widely regarded as one of Asia’s leading banking executives. Under his leadership, DBS has garnered numerous accolades, including being named “World’s Best Bank” multiple times by leading financial publications.
His appointment to the CPA reflects both his deep understanding of economic and financial systems and his longstanding contribution to Singapore’s corporate and civic landscape.
The inclusion of experienced private sector leaders like Gupta underscores Singapore’s commitment to drawing from a broad talent pool in shaping national policy and governance.
