NRI Manjit Singh Bedi, naturalized U.S. citizen wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over an alleged $600,000 SNAP benefits fraud scheme, has been arrested by Punjab Police in Jalandhar.
Bedi, 65, was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list on September 3, with the bureau offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
According to the FBI, Bedi allegedly operated the Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma, Washington, and participated in a scheme between March 2024 and June 2025 that converted SNAP food benefits into cash. Investigators allege that he swiped customers’ EBT cards, provided cash instead of eligible food purchases and kept part of the proceeds.
After being indicted on wire-fraud and SNAP-benefits-fraud charges, Bedi was reportedly released under supervision and ordered to surrender his passport and remain in Washington state. The FBI says he subsequently crossed into Canada and fled to India. A federal arrest warrant was issued on May 21, 2026, for violating the conditions of his supervision.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed Bedi’s arrest in Jalandhar. Local police said he was apprehended in the Paragpur area following information about his whereabouts. He has also been booked in connection with a separate case registered in Jalandhar.
The arrest represents another case in which international cooperation has helped U.S. authorities locate an alleged fraud suspect who fled the country. U.S. officials are expected to pursue the next legal steps regarding Bedi’s case and possible proceedings in the United States.
