NRI Dr Bains an Eminent Scholar, Encyclopaedist and Museologist on ‘The Sikh 100’ list

 An eminent Sikh scholar and lifetime volunteer Dr Raghbir Singh Bains from Canada has made it to list of the top powerful and influential 100 Sikhs in the world who have relentlessly served the global society. The annual list ‘The Sikh 100’ for 2013 has been published by the Sikh Directory UK (London). 

Born at Dagana Kalan and brought up at village Manak Dheri to mother Pritam Kaur and father Naginder Singh Bains, Dr Raghbir Singh proved his commitment as a renowned encyclopaedist, reputed museologist, philanthropist, dedicated environmentalist, eminent drug therapist, and an extraordinary lifetime campaigner against social evils.

Dr Bains is founder and producer of the first of its kind "Encyclopaedia of Sikhism" on Multimedia Technology in the world which was released by the then Prime Minister of Canada in the Parliament House on December 11, 1996. Dr Bains is also global record holder for "setting up five Multimedia Sikh Museums" in the world.

With Sikh tenets entrenched in his heart and a special eye towards the problems and needs of the young (across the world), he has worked against the menace of drugs, against human trafficking, prostitution, sexual exploitation and for the cause of propagating religio-socio-cultural Sikh history in his efforts panning various countries. He has served on various advisory committees of NGO and government

Listed on the website as an educationist, his volunteer work for success of "Nishan-e-Sikhi Project" based at Khadur Sahib is a silent educational revolution in the region.  The Charitable Trust provides education to thousands of rural and urban students charging low or no fees and in a job-oriented manner. He is writer of many classic books to train future generation.

Along with numerous awards for his vast field of works in Canada, Punjab, India and elsewhere in the world, he has been honoured with the Order of Khalsa, the Prominent Sikh of the Century Award by the Government of Punjab in 1999, Sikh Scholar of the Computer Age 2006, Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Medal by the Government of Canada in the year 2002, Good Citizen of Surrey, Canada and the prestigious ‘Order of British Columbia’, Government of British Columbia, Canada, in 2005.

Born and brought up in Punjab, he immigrated to Canada in the year 1990 and has since been working to eradicate various social ills in India, Canada and in African countries as well. He now divides time between India and Canada annually.

Also a dedicated votary of propagating the loyalty to the mother tongue in India and abroad, he has been instrumental in installing Punjabi Street Signs in Punjabi Bazar Surrey-Delta, BC, with th help of the community. He also got Punjabi-speaking ‘Community Police Station’ opened in Delta, BC, to help immigrants and the host community.

Mr Bains also counsels incarcerated criminals in prisons voluntarily to rehabilitate them.

In Jalandhar (Punjab), he has set up the ‘YAAD Foundation’ (Youth Against AIDS and Drugs) to work for the eradication of the evils of addiction and AIDS in the region.

In Canada, he is also bridging the gap between new immigrants and hosting communities to build up mutual understanding by educating individuals in person or through his talk shows and writings to establish global peace and prosperity. He has special skills in four languages and expertise in computer programming.
