CBI summoned Assam Cabinet minister Gautam Roy and
his son, Rahul in connection with murder of a NRI
Protul Chandra Deb. Protul Chandra Deb was the brother-in-law
and political rival of Assam minister Gautam Roy.
Tarun Gogoi, Assam chief minister refused to
remove his Cabinet minister Gautam Roy who was interrogated
by the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi
in connection with abduction and murder of a NRI businessman
Protul Chandra Deb in Assam. Tarun Gogoi said: "I
am not aware if Mr Gautam Roy has been interrogated
in any murder case by the CBI. What local media is
alleging is not based on fact.".he said, "If
Gautam Roy is chargesheeted by the CBI in the murder
case, he will be removed from his post"
Before abduction, NRI Protul Chandra Deb wrote a
letter to his family that he was facing harassment
and threat to his life from the minister and his hired
goondas. His daughter Dr Shipra Deb from UK, handed
over the letter to senior Congress leaders and Central
ministers who later forwarded it to the CBI. On the
bases of this complaint, CBI summoned Assam Cabinet
minister Gautam Roy and his son, Rahu
NRI businessman Protul Chandra Deb
was abducted in March 2004 and Assam Govt. did nothing
one year. After the pressure of his daughter Dr Shipra
Deb and NRIs media, the centre Govt. handed over this
case to CBI. CBI recovered his skeletal remains
this year in the jungles in the Assam-Mizoram border.
So far eight persons have been arrested who have taken
part in the abduction.
