The Indus Enterprises “TIE” of Southern California
met at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos, CA on the evening of
April 1, 2009. The registration started around 5:30 PM, and
at 6:30 the TIE members and guests entered the hall. There were
two stations for buffet dinner. People lined up and served themselves
enjoying the Desi food provided by India House of Artesia. The
food was very delicious. The hall was totally full with about
600 guests.

At 7:15 PM, Sumita Batra, President of TIE welcomed the audience
and Thanked everyone for coming. She briefly spoke about the
Southern California TIE chapter and appreciated the sponsors
and the supporters.
The first speaker, Mr. Azad Oommen, gave introduction of The
American India Foundation “ AIF”. The American India
Foundation (AIF, founded 2001) is a nonprofit American development
organization that is devoted to accelerating social and economic
change in India. The AIF has invested in over 100 Indian non-governmental
organizations while raising about $50 million since its inception.
It is one of the largest secular, non-partisan American organizations
supporting development work in India. He said that AIF with
the help of Indian patterns have trained 40,000 young people
and has a goal to reach 100,000 by the year 2010.
AIF works with partners to implement programs in education,
livelihood, and public health sectors in India - with emphases
on elementary education, women's empowerment, and HIV/AIDS,
respectively. AIF through its program Digital Equalizer attempts
to bridge the digital divide by providing computers, internet
access and training to improve learning and critical thinking
amongst students of under-resourced Indian schools. It also
implements the Service Corps Fellowship, which sends skilled
young Americans to work with NGOs in India for a ten month period.
The fellowship helps exchange technical skills, intellectual
resources and helps increase the capacity of Indian NGOs to
continue their work while giving American leaders a good understanding
of India.
The speakers also included Mr. Navneet Chug, President Elect
- TIE. He also welcomed everyone and introduced the keynote
speaker Mr. Nandan Nilekani Co-Chairman of Infosys.
