The program started at 7:00 PM. Before the program all the committee members , politicians and guests took the stage to congratulate the community on the 62nd Independence Day at an event arranged by the Federation of Indo-American Associations of Southern California at the Excelsior High School ground on the evening of August 15, 2009.

Earlier the event commenced with Executive VP Anju Garg welcoming the audience followed by the lamp lighting ceremony and broadcasting India’s Prime Minister’s Independence Day Speech. The US national anthem was sung and then ‘Jana Gana Mana’ by everybody present.

Before presenting a Certificate of Special Recognition to the organization, Cypress City Mayor Pro Tem, Dr. Parkash Narain appealed to the members of the audience to participate in local level politics to make the changes they desired and to give back to the community and gave away the certificates of appreciation to the executive committee members.

Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu remarked that all the remarkable progress and the spectacular improvement in the standard of living in India was on account of the opportunities that the country provides by protecting the freedom and liberty it accords to its citizens. He also had proclamations for FIAA members from the City of Anaheim and he also presented certificates of appreciation to community leaders.

In the opening speech by President FIAA, Mr.Ajmer Singh, walked through the independence movement and saluted the many who had sacrificed their lives protecting the country including during terrorist attacks and wanted the authorities to usher in stricter laws to prevent such crimes.

The entertainment for the evening contained several cultural items by youngsters from the community, coordinated by VP Cultural Harjit Bhogal and Vandana Ranjan.Nauzad Sadry, Dipali Singh, and DJ Zubin entertained the audience.

Different dance schools had participated in the event the folk dance of Haryana was performed by Nidhi Mehta. Rangashree Dance School had performed dances from Kerala and Gujraat. Ganesh Vandana and Tarana was performed by Nupur Dance Academy. People had enjoyed the different styles of dancing. Bhangra was danced by People’s Bhangra and Bhangra regiment. Hilli and Celina (mother daughter team) performed a folk dance of Assam. Kamana, Aisma did the solo dancing on songs from movie Kaal and Hum dil de chuke sanam. Three group dances, contemporary and Bulle Shah’s songs were performed by the students of Vandana Dance School. Contemporary dance was performed by Ananya Ranjan dance was based on the real story of Kargil Shaheed captain Jintu Gogie. Dances were choreographed by Vandana Ranjan.

More than four thousand people attended the event. The program ended around 10:30 PM. It was indeed an event to remember.
