Dr. Sampat Shivangi, 57-year-old , a Jackson obstetrician/gynecologist
has been elected by a US state Republican party as
a full delegate to the National Convention for re-nominate
Bush .He is one of the top fund-raisers in Mississipi
state for the Republican Party. Party convention to
nominate President George W. Bush for a second term
as President is to be held in New York city from 28
th August to 2 nd September, 2004
Besides being a politician by choice, the medical
practitioner is also the first Indian to be on the
American Medical Association, the apex law making
body.
Last year, Congress authorized spending $500,000
for researching the high incidence of diabetes among
Indian Americans, it marked the first time it granted
a large sum of money specifically to address health
concerns of that minority group, reports Fremont,
California news weekly India Post.
The passage of the appropriations bill was being
regarded as a major boost for the American Association
of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) on Capitol Hill.
The money did not go to AAPI per se but to the
Indian American community, said Dr. Sampat Shivangi,
the AAPI representative on the board of the American
Medical Association.
A global comparative study found a diabetes rate
of 14-20 percent among Indian Americans. Whats
frightening is that the disease is increasingly hitting
at a much younger age, said Dr. Shivangi.
