As I sat through the Sam H. Jones Community Awareness Forum,
Arab Americans Contributing to Indianas Success,
sponsored by the Central Indiana Community Foundation, I wondered
whether recent arrivals from diverse cultures will someday
make contributions in America much like the proud legacy of
the Jewish people in arts, music, humanities and government.
(This was the subject of a column by Rabbis Dennis and Sandy
Sasso in the March 1 Star.)
Immigrant Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and others
converging in the heartland with their distinct cultures,
energy and dreams have many lessons to learn from the Jewish
and Christian communities.
While maintaining solidarity within their own cultural
struggles, Jews have a record and spirit of daring, creative
genius and lasting achievements throughout the passage of
our nations journey.
Todays immigrants walk in the footsteps of early
pioneers. We salute them and anticipate that they in time
will make milestone contributions of their own as Americans.
