Immigration enforcement officers conducted raids on two factories in the West Midlands, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals suspected of illegal working. All detainees are Indian nationals, apprehended following targeted operations initiated by the Home Office.

The crackdown commenced at a bed manufacturing facility based on intelligence indicating the presence of unauthorized employees. Seven men were apprehended for alleged illegal employment during this operation. Subsequently, enforcement officers proceeded to a nearby cake factory, where four men were found to be violating their visa conditions, with one also engaged in illegal work.

In addition to the factory raids, an Indian woman was arrested at a residence on suspicion of immigration-related offenses. While four suspects were detained pending potential removal from the UK, the remaining eight were released on bail, instructed to report regularly to the Home Office.

Both factories implicated in the raids face substantial penalties if found guilty of employing illegal workers without conducting mandatory pre-employment checks. The intensified enforcement efforts align with recent government measures to triple fines for employers enabling illegal migrants to work. Under the updated regulations, initial breaches now incur fines of £45,000 per illegal worker, with repeated violations within a three-year period subject to fines of £60,000.

Minister Michael Tomlinson emphasized the government's commitment to bolstering immigration enforcement nationwide, warning of severe consequences for employers flouting regulations. Eddy Montgomery, director at the Home Office, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the detrimental impact of illegal working on communities and emphasizing the stringent penalties awaiting offenders.
