Professor of Cardiology, Jaspal Singh Kooner has been awarded 'Hospital Doctor of the Year' and his cardiology team has separately been named as 'Hospital Cardiology Team of the Year' at the prestigious Hospital Doctor Awards.

Professor Kooner works for Imperial College's National Heart and Lung Institute and is based at Ealing Hospital. He said, "I am absolutely thrilled for our team. To be separately awarded the Hospital Doctor of the Year was really quite unexpected.

"National recognition of our achievements by our peers is very special. We have worked tirelessly to establish a first class clinical service for our patients and will continue to build on these strengths to fight heart disease in the community."

Some of the department's achievements so far include:

  • A cardiology team that provides state-of-the-art non-invasive, invasive and interventional services to its local population, and is engaged in world-class clinical research, in a busy district general hospital.
  • Development of unique service models in community-wide coronary risk prevention; primary care-led rapid access chest pain clinic; acute chest pain evaluation unit; dietary intervention in families of CHD patients; bespoke heart failure service; on-site cardiac catheterisation; and nationally acclaimed echocardiology courses.
  • Patient participation in service development and service delivery, providing a co-operative and integrated approach to clinical care.
  • Priority to teaching and training at undergraduate, postgraduate, nurse and clinical psychologist levels.

The team continues to raise substantial non-NHS funding, to help develop both clinical and research facilities in the Cardiology department.
