NRI scientist joined Defence Study Science Group

NRI scientist, SURYA K. MALLAPRAGADA, Ph.D, Associate Professor of chemical and biological engineering at the Iowa State University nominated to a prestigious study group that assists the United States with the science and technology of defence and national security. Study group members annually participate in a series of four sessions at various defence installations and military contractors across the US.

The Defence Study Science Group, every year invites about a dozen qualified scientists from the different universities to take part in its two-year program focused on its defence policy. This group is a non-profit corporation funded by the Bush administration. The study group also looks at the systems, missions and operations of the US military.

NRI Mallapragada, said: "It is a chance to meet other researchers scientists working in similar areas and more importantly, to see what needs are out there and come up with some exciting new ideas."

SURYA K. MALLAPRAGADA:

She eaches chemical engineering to undergraduate and graduate students and does research in the area of polymeric materials for medical applications.

  • Associate Professor at Iowa State University
  • Education
B.S., ChE, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (1993)
    Ph.D., ChE, Purdue University (1996)
  • Awards
Andrews Graduate Fellowship, Purdue University, 1993-95
NSF Faculty Early CAREER Award, 2000
Early Achievement in Research Award, ISU Foundation, 2001
    3M Non-tenured Faculty Award, 2001
Named by MIT's Technology Review Magazine as one of the World's Top 100 Young Innovators, 2002
    Global Indus Technovator Award, 2003
  • Research Interests
Our research program is focused on designing polymers with tailored micro/nanostructures, both at the surface as well as
in the bulk, with relevance to technological and bioengineering applications. Fundamental investigations of molecular
attributes, as well as studies of macroscopic performance are linked together to investigate the relationship between the two.
    • Bioinspired Smart Copolymers
Our group has developed techniques to synthesize novel smart bioinspired multi-block copolymers that exhibit pH and temperature sensitivity. These polymers are cationic and undergo thermoreversible gelation at body temperatures.
    • Combinatorial Synthesis and Characterization of Polyanhydrides- We are developing high-throughput strategies for synthesizing libraries of biodegradable polyanhydride copolymers with different degradation times.

    • Semicrystalline Polymer Drying- The focus of this research is the investigation of molecular phenomena that control the drying process of semicrystalline polymer films.

  • She also involve in Publications - “Rapid Synthesis of Polyanhydrides by Microwave Polymerization”, “Synthesis and Characterization of Diblock and Gel Forming Pentablock Copolymers of Tertiary Amine Methacrylates, Poly(Ethylene
Glycol) and Poly(Propylene Glycol)”, “Synthesis and Characterization of Injectable, Water-soluble Copolymers of Tertiary Amine Methacrylates and Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Containing Methacrylates”, “Al-Cu-Fe Quasicrystal/Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Composites as Biomaterials for Acetabular Cup Prosthetics”, “Atomistic Studies of Defect Nucleation during Nanoindentation of Au (001)”, “Synergistic Effects of Physical and Chemical Guidance Cues on Neurite
Alignment and Outgrowth on Biodegradable Polymer Substrates” and “Micropatterned Schwann Cell-Seeded
Biodegradable Polymer Substrates Significantly Enhance Neurite Alignment and Outgrowth”
