A Sikh man who killed his teenage daughter over
an affair with a white man is being praised by his
wife and other children.
Rajinder Atwal of Kitimat was convicted of second-degree
murder in the 2003 stabbing death of his daughter
Amandeep.
He had objected to her love affair with school pal
Todd McIsaac.
Atwal's wife Kulwinder says she still supports her
husband, even though her life has been destroyed since
his arrest, calling him a good person.
During a sentencing hearing in B.C. Supreme Court
in Vancouver, the defence submitted a statement from
his other daughter Tejinder, who said: "My dad
has been here for me all my life."
In other statement, Atwal's son Narinder called his
father "a great human being."
The Crown says Atwal should not be eligible for parole
for 20 to 25 years, while the defence wants the period
set at 12 to 15 years.
Atwal's parole eligibility will be set on June 22.
