Manjit Singh GK, a leader of Shiromani Akali Dal was attacked and beaten by a group of 30-35 NRIs in California on Saturday, Aug, 25, 2018. Three people have been arrested for assault with the attack.
"I am hurt. They pushed me and kicked me brutally. It was a brutal murderous attack," Manjit Singh told the media.
A group of 30-35 NRIs can be seen pushing Manjit Singh to the ground, causing his turban to fall off, and kicking him. His face was also reportedly blackened before he was taken to safety.
Manjit Singh, along with Badal Group's PA Charanjit Singh Brar, had travelled to Yuba City, California to meet some Sikh community Leaders following a visit to New York,
Gobind Singh Longowal president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) condemned the attack. "It is very unfortunate that in America, Sikhs are being repeatedly targeted. This is the handiwork of agencies that want to instigate tensions among the Sikhs. It is the responsibility of the US government to take strict actions against these people behind the attack. I condemn this incident."
Harsimrat Kaur Badal , Badal's daughter in law, Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing said in a tweet to media, ""Strongly Condemn the Cowardly attack on unarmed ManjitGK at the Yuba City Gurughar in complete disregard of Maryada and Sikhi! To these agents of ISI, the only way to get referendum is by attacking n intimidating Sikhs. No Sikh will ever be cowed down by your dastardly acts."
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal also wrote on the micro-blogging site, "I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on Manjit Singh GK. He was unarmed and paying obeisance at Gurughar where he was attacked by goons backed by ISI. Akali_Dal_ has never cowed down to terror and will continue to stand strong on the principles of Sikhism."
Manjit GK is the eldest son of (Jathedar) Santokh Singh of Delhi, who was a closely associated with the Indian National Congress and became a close aide of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the late seventies and early eighties.He associates with Punjab’s ruling Badal Akali Da, BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
