They won the Business and Commerce title in the northern
Asian Jewel Awards in Manchester on Saturday night. The awards recognise
high achievers from the Asian community in fields like healthcare and
education, public service, business and commerce, media and arts, the
professional sector and small business.
Brothers Ajmail and Sudarghara bought Cains, Liverpool's
only brewery, 18 months ago.Since then they have turned it around taking
on new staff and winning new orders and industry awards.
High street banking giant Lloyds TSB backed the Asian
Jewel Awards and the bank's deputy group chief executive Mike Fairey
paid his own tribute."The Dusanj brothers are inspirational entrepreneurs,"
he said.
"The judges were particularly impressed by the
way they have transformed Cains Brewery from loss-making to profitability
in less than two years. We believe they are shining examples of business
achievement in Britain today."
Sudarghara Dusanj said: "This award is dedicated
the people of Liverpool and our Staff, to win this award is a great
indicator that Cains Brewery is back on track as a great British company
based in a fine city which provides every opportunity for entrepreneurs.
"If our team didn't share our passion for our beers
and pubs we wouldn't be half as successful. Ajmail and I came to the
north of England as businessmen who had purchased a company in need
of an injection of cash and enthusiasm - I hope that we have demonstrated
our commitment to both of those."
Beer production will continue at Liverpools famous
Cains Brewery following its sale to drinks distribution company Gardner-Shaw.
The Danish Brewery Group sold Cains brewery and public houses to the
Midlands-headquartered Gardner-Shaw.
Gardner-Shaw, which has eleven depots around the UK,
is owned and managed by brothers Sudarghara Dusanj and Ajmail Dusanj.
Since taking over the company ten years ago, they have transformed Gardner-Shaw
into a highly successful business.
Sudarghara Dusanj, director, Gardner-Shaw, said: Cains
brewery has been important to Liverpools economy for many years.
We recognise the importance of preserving the heritage of the company
and firmly believe we
can take this piece of history and transform it into a modern day success
story. We will continue to produce beers under the award-winning Cains
brand and maintain production on the current site
History:
Born in County Cork in 1826, Robert Cain first arrived
in Liverpool at the age of eighteen. From his modest pay as a merchant
seaman he managed to accumulate sufficient funds to buy a pub with brewhouse
attached in Limekiln Lane. He rapidly gained a reputation for his brewing
skills and quickly became known throughout the city for the exceptional
quality of his beers. By 1878 demand for his ales was such that he acquired
an old established brewery on the current site. A new brewery was built
between 1883 and 1902 and was considered to be the most modern of the
time.
This is the landmark red brick brewery where Cains Ales
are still brewed to this day. In 1911 Cains was merged with Walkers
of Warrington. This formed a new company known as Walker Cain Ltd. All
production was transferred to Warrington and in 1923 the Stanhope Brewery
was sold to Daniel Higson.
In 1985 the Brewery was acquired by Boddingtons and
in 1990 the Boddington brands were acquired by Whitbread, leaving the
Brewery to close.
In 1990 the Brewery was reopened by G.B. Brewers ltd
and in 1991 was renamed Robert Cain & Co Ltd and is still dedicated
to producing award winning ales in the tradition of those originally
brewed by Robert Cain himself
