ARRESTED for cheating people by promising them jobs abroad, East Africa-based NRI Anilbhai alias Nitin Sharad Patel was remanded to police custody for three days by a local court on Tuesday.

Patel was arrested by Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) officials from a room in Hotel Yuvraj where he had been staying for the past few days. Police also seized some forged visa forms and a machine used for embossing the stamp of notary of the United States.

According to PI H A Rathod, the accused had cheated several people in Anand district since May 2003. Among his victims was one Bharat Chandu Patel of Ranoli village in Anand district.

Bharat paid Rs 2.5 lakh on May 4, 2003, for a work permit in US. A few weeks ago, the accused handed over a forged visa permit and a forged letter stating that he was to appear in the US consulate in Mumbai for a medical check-up.

But Bharat was taken aback when the US consulate officials told him that the letter was not sent by them and it was a forged document.

Patel returned and traced the NRI in Hotel Yuvraj. He immediately informed the police and got him arrested.

Interrogation of the accused revealed that he had cheated a couple of others as well by adopting the same modus operandi. One of the victims reportedly beat him up and snatched his passport and other documents, making his immediate return to East Africa difficult. Hence, he moved from one place to another, trying to obtain duplicate copies of his passport and travel documents from East Africa. However, he was caught before he could flee.

According to police, he had no regular job in East Africa. However, he owns a lot of property in East Africa amassed by his father who died about a year back
