NRI Prisha Tapre,16, has made headlines by becoming one of the youngest swimmers to complete a solo English Channel crossing, declaring that "this is just the beginning" of her swimming journey.
On September 4, Prisha, from Watford, successfully swam the 21-mile (34km) stretch from Dover to Cap Gris Nez, France, in a remarkable 11 hours and 48 minutes. She described the achievement as "unreal" and admitted she’s still coming to terms with the accomplishment, saying she felt "really good."
Despite encountering challenging conditions, including choppy waters and darkness during the first two hours, Prisha experienced calmer and warmer conditions later in her swim, which she described as "perfect."
A member of Watford Swimming Club, Prisha began swimming at age 12 and managed to balance her training with studying for her GCSEs. She hopes to inspire young girls from ethnic minority backgrounds to pursue sports like swimming, aiming to break down existing stereotypes.
Her remarkable swim also supported a cause close to her heart, raising £3,700 for Akshaya Patra UK, a charity focused on alleviating hunger and food poverty among children in India and the UK.
The English Channel swim is known for its considerable challenges and risks, but Prisha remains committed to her future endeavors. "I’m determined to continue pushing forward. This is only the beginning," she said.
Jeremy Irvine, open water coach at Watford Swimming Club, commended Prisha for her dedication and hard work: "Supporting Prisha and seeing her dreams come to life has been an incredible honor."
