Sikh in India:

  • Sikh neighborhoods in Delhi have never been Congress supporters ever since the 1984 riots. In such localities where hundreds of riot victims have been rehabilitated, it will take much more than becoming Prime Minister to appease people. "The Congress was blamed for the 1984 riots and were punished for it and unseated from power. In Gujarat after the riots, the BJP has now paid for it, so political parties should keep that in mind," said a local.

Opposition Leaders:

  • June 03, 2004: A large number of MPs belonging to the National Democratic Alliance and Telugu Desam Party today knocked the door of Rashtrapati Bhavan to press for removal of six tainted Ministers from Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet. Delegation also raised the issue of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler’s alleged complicity in the 1984 Sikh riots

  • Sikhs and Hindus can never fight as they have same roots, Majority of NRI said - it is a failure of democracy and Central government that even after 20 years of ’84 riots, not a single arrest has been made in the case”.

There is also great need for changing the very model of policing. INDIA policing is still on the model of British colonial rulers. It has to change to democratic model from colonial model.....

The day, Sonia Gandhi announced the appointment of Dr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister of India, most of the NRIs around the world has only one voice... "now India is on right track". NRIs are looking for today and tomorrow and not what ever happened in the past . Sonia Gandhi set up a example in the world that she is looking a future of India by giving chair to Mr. Singh who is always a quiet, unassuming personality, out of the spotlight Singh faded into the background. Sonia Gandhi will be a winner always because:

  • After taking charge of the party in 1998, Sonia Gandhi went around Sikh places of worship - gurdwaras - in Delhi apologizing for the riots. "I feel this kind of incident should not have happened," Sonia Gandhi told the Sikhs. "And my husband Rajiv Gandhi felt the same."

  • Hailing the decision of Congress president Sonia Gandhi to appoint Manmohan Singh as prime minister, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) said her act would serve as a soothing balm on the "wounded" Sikh psyche after the 1984 riots....... Amritsar, May 20, 2004
  • This action of Sonia Gandhi has applied balm on the deep wounds of Sikhs masses after 'Operation Blue Star' and the anti-Sikh riots of '84

Only time will tell if Manmohan Singh is able to assuage the "hurt" feelings of the Sikhs as Congress has "not been" favorable towards the community.

"We, NRIs congratulate Manmohan Singh. As a person we are happy with him. He is not vindictive. But the result in future will depend on his actions.

It is claimed that Sikhs have now forgotten the wounds inflicted by the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 was wrong, "riots cannot be forgotten". NRIs would judge the new Prime Minister by his ability to ensure the guilty were given exemplary punishment.

Do you think a new chapter would open for Sikhs due to the elevation of Manmohan Singh? or a Sikh becoming the PM on behalf of the Congress does not mean that the balm has been applied on their (Sikhs) wounds.

"it would be better if Manmohan Singh apologize for the riots on behalf of Congress". said NRI

We, NRIs are not against or in favor of Congress or BJP or any other party, we like to see who is changing to democratic model from colonial model.
