General Colin Powell Meets with most successful NRI businessmen
and local leaders at La Terrazza, Vancouver
Vancouver, BC, June 18, 2008

This was the event of the year in Vancouver with a very strong
Indo-Canadian presence. A private dinner event was held for US retired
four-star General Colin Powell on Thursday at La Terrazza Restaurant,
Vancouver, after the General’s speech at the Trade and Convention
Centre to meet various industry leaders in Vancouver and so he can
create stronger links to India with his new Vancouver connections
as well.
The event was organized by businessman David Sidoo and political
advisor Barinder Sall. Barinder Sall has built a reputation
as one of Canada's top strategic advisors by navigating the careers
of several of the country's highest profile personalities. Working
with dynamic leaders in the realms of politics, business, law enforcement,
and community development, he is widely recognized as a highly effective
people connector whose collaborations have an impressive record
of success. The people he work with closely are all “Firsts”:
the first Indo-Canadian Premier outside India Honourable Ujjal Dosanjh,
the first Indo-Canadian Police Chief in North America Kash Heed,
the first senior cabinet minister in Canadian politics Honourable
Herb Dhaliwal and the first judge to leave the court of Appeal and
enter politics the Attorney General Honourable Wally Oppal. Political
advisor Barinder Sall went to school at the Harvard JFK School of
Government with General Powell
Vancouver businessman and Restaurateur David Sidoo who just partnered
with the famous chef Daniel Boulud and is opening a new restaurant
DB moderne in October.
La Terrazza which is owned by businessman Iqbal Grewal,
the Vancouver magazine in Dec 2007 said, this restaurant is where
the powerful people of Vancouver dine and get deals. It has one
of the largest selections of wines in the country with over 2,500
different labels and 40,000 bottles. It also has one of the nations
most award winning wine lists with a decades worth of “Best
of” Award of Excellence from the prestigious. Located close
to most major venues including GM Place, BC Place, and the Queen
Elizabeth Theatre, La Terrazza boasts some of the city's most celebrated
cuisine and one of the very best wine lists in Canada.
The Vancouver magazine further wrote-Wealthy shipping mogul Kyle
Washington is a big fan of this room—he once held a series
of 12 dinners here, each a step toward a $600 million deal. The
private Enoteca (wine library) housed Concord Pacific CEO Terry
Hui while he negotiated the CBC building deal—it also provided
the setting for Premier Gordon Campbell during his contentious sale
of BC Rail. Federal Liberal leadership contender Bob Rae booked
the secluded Terrazza room for a $5,000 a plate fundraiser for exclusive
VIPs. Why all the action? Not only is the food excellent (Washington
favours the beef carpaccio and the strozzapretti Bolognese with
a bottle of vintage Masseto), but owner Iqbal Grewal is extremely
well connected, particularly in the Indo-Canadian community. On
any given night you’ll find heavyweights like millionaire
realtor Gurdev Sandhu or Colliers Executive Vice President Avtar
Bains (responsible for $7.2 billion in commercial land sales) pressing
the flesh at the corner table by the fireplace (Table 6) or politicos
Herb Dhaliwal, Ujjal Dosanjh, or Attorney General Wally Oppal hosting
fundraisers in one of the private rooms. It was here that multi-millionaire
Peter Dhillon celebrated his 40th birthday (the cranberry king has
a white cran-tini named after him, the Petertini), flying in comedian
Russell Peters for a private show (approximate cost: $100,000 for
the evening).
There were 60 people total that were invited to this intimate
and close dinner with the General. The list was a who-is-who of
Vancouver and the Indo-Canadian community was very well represented.
It was a very proud moment to know that around the most successful
