UK Election: Polling Station Hours and How to Find Your Voting Location

On Thursday July 04, 2024, millions of voters will have the opportunity to participate in the general election, selecting their local MPs and influencing the formation of the UK’s next government. In response to delays in Scotland and parts of England, some councils have arranged for replacement postal-vote packs.

Polling Station Hours and Locations

Polling stations will be open on Thursday, 4 July, from 07:00 to 22:00 BST. Voters in line by 22:00 will still be allowed to cast their votes. Voting is restricted to local polling stations, which may differ from previous elections. Your polling card contains the address, or you can find it online.

Election Guidelines and Constituency Information

The UK is divided into 650 constituencies, each electing one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons. Most candidates represent political parties, while some are independents. Under the "first past the post" system, the candidate with the most votes becomes the MP for that area. The party with the most MPs typically forms the government, with its leader becoming the prime minister. This election uses newly redrawn constituency boundaries to balance voter numbers and reflect population changes.

Photo ID Requirements for Voting

New rules introduced in May 2023 require voters in England, Scotland, and Wales to show valid photo ID to vote in person. You do not need your polling card. Acceptable IDs include passports and driving licences, even if expired, as long as you are still recognizable. If your ID is lost or stolen, you can apply for an emergency proxy vote until 17:00 on polling day, provided you and your proxy are registered voters. Northern Ireland has required photo ID since 2003.

Postal Voting Information

If your postal vote has not arrived, contact your local council’s electoral services team for a replacement pack by 17:00 on Thursday. Completed postal votes can be submitted at your polling station by 22:00 on Thursday or delivered to the address on your postal voting pack during office hours before polling day. You can drop off up to five postal vote packs for friends and family. Campaigners may only handle postal votes for close family members or those they regularly care for. In Northern Ireland, campaigners cannot handle postal votes, and postal votes are not accepted at polling stations.

Emergency Proxy Voting

Voters who cannot attend their polling station on 4 July due to last-minute work commitments or medical emergencies can request an emergency proxy vote until 17:00 on polling day in England, Scotland, and Wales. This does not apply to voters whose postal votes have not arrived.

Post-Election Process

Once votes are counted, the King typically invites the leader of the party with the most MPs to form a government and become prime minister. The leader of the second-largest party usually becomes the leader of the opposition. If no party secures a majority, resulting in a hung Parliament, the largest party may form a coalition or operate as a minority government. The new Parliament will convene on 9 July to elect a Speaker and swear in members, followed by the State Opening of Parliament and the King's Speech on 17 July, outlining the government’s priorities.
