Dr. Andrew Fleming, the British Deputy High Commissioner for East and Northeast India, emphasized on Friday the significant opportunities for collaboration between India and the UK in the education technology sector. The UK’s innovative edtech offerings are set to strengthen ties with West Bengal, particularly enhancing the education sector in Kolkata.

The UK-India EdTech collaboration event, held at the British Club on August 2, was organized by the British Deputy High Commission Kolkata in partnership with the Union Education Group, WOWL, and supported by ABE, Defacto Ed, Novistra, and the British Council. This event aimed to celebrate and advance the partnership between the two nations in the edtech field.

Gathering educators, policymakers, and industry leaders in Kolkata, the event showcased the transformative potential of edtech in improving education and fostering stronger bilateral relations. UK stakeholders presented cutting-edge technologies developed by UK edtech firms, which are designed to enhance learning, personalize education, and support educators in India.
The initiative aims to build collaborations between Indian educational institutions and renowned UK schools.

Dr. Fleming noted, “We have already witnessed successful collaborations between UK edtech companies and Indian institutions. For example, platforms like Century Tech and Sparx Maths have partnered with Indian schools, yielding impressive results in student engagement and academic achievement. The Union Education Group and WOWL have also collaborated with schools in Kolkata and Darjeeling, with students benefiting from their language learning platform.”

He added, “These partnerships are just the beginning; there is vast potential for further collaboration.”

Harry Darell, CEO of Union Education Group, commented, “Union Education Group (UEG) is expanding its presence in India through collaboration with WOWL Edtech. Since the launch of the British Council’s ‘Digital Learning and Innovation Fund,’ we have been working with WOWL to reach Indian students across primary, secondary, and higher education, as well as professionals seeking skill development and improved employability.”

Darell continued, “While our initial focus has been on language and skills development through the WOWL app in collaboration with UEG educators, we are now moving towards establishing physical centers in Kolkata and Darjeeling, with plans to expand to Delhi and Bangalore later this year. Additionally, UEG will soon facilitate tours of UK schools and universities for Indian students, further focusing on UK study abroad opportunities.”
