NRI Shazeb Khalid, 25, has been found guilty of murder in the death of cyclist NRI Vignesh Pattabi Raman after a 28-day trial at Reading Crown Court. Khalid, of no fixed abode, was convicted on Wednesday, 11 September, for using a stolen Range Rover to strike and kill the 36-year-old on Addington Road on 14 February.
Emergency services responded quickly, but Mr. Raman succumbed to his injuries at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. A post-mortem revealed that he died from a fatal head injury.
Khalid was one of eight men initially arrested following the incident. He was formally charged with murder on 20 February. Alongside Khalid, Soiheem Hussain, 27, of Rossby, Shinfield, was also on trial. While Hussain was acquitted of the murder charge, he was convicted of assisting an offender. A third defendant, Mya Reilly, 20, of Chiltern Gardens, Woodcote, was found not guilty of the charge of assisting an offender.
Khalid had previously admitted to manslaughter in an earlier hearing but denied murder. Hussain was arrested and charged in late February, while Reilly faced charges in May. Both Khalid and Hussain are scheduled for sentencing on 10 October.
Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin, the Senior Investigating Officer in the case, expressed his relief at the verdict. He stated, "The jury rightly found Khalid guilty of murder and Hussain guilty of assisting an offender. Khalid used the stolen vehicle as a weapon and left Vignesh to die."
Brangwin also acknowledged the toll the tragedy has taken on Mr. Raman’s family, hoping the convictions provide some measure of justice and closure.
