Bhim Kohli, 80, was walking his dog in Franklin Park when he was ‘brutally assaulted’ by a group of young people, later succumbing to his injuries in the hospital, according to police.

Four out of the five children initially arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr. Kohli have been released without further action. The elderly grandfather, who had three children, was attacked near his home in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, at around 6:30 pm on Sunday, police reported. He passed away the following evening.

The suspects included a 14-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, and three 12-year-olds—two girls and one boy. As of Tuesday, Leicestershire Police confirmed that only the 14-year-old boy remains in custody.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr. Kohli died from a neck injury, with further tests pending. Earlier in July, Mr. Kohli had reported to the police that he was verbally harassed by a group of young people near his home.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the alleged attack are still under investigation, with police maintaining an open mind, the newspaper added.

Mr. Kohli was known for his love of his dog, Rocky, and his passion for gardening. He had lived in the area for four decades, as shared by his daughter. A fellow allotment holder described Mr. Kohli as a "lovely man" who often brought his grandchildren to the allotment, where his wife would also help him.

Police said the group of young people involved in the assault fled the scene before officers arrived.

Mr. Kohli’s daughter, who has not been named, told the Leicester Mercury that her father was “kicked in the neck, kicked in the spine” during the attack, which occurred just 30 seconds from his home.

Deep Kalia, a neighbor, told The Mirror that the family is devastated by the loss. He described Mr. Kohli as a fit and active man who spent much of his time at the allotment and was a father to three grown children and two grandsons.

Mr. Kohli had previously run a factory in Leicester producing knitwear but had retired many years ago. The tragic incident occurred near the park entrance on Bramble Way. At the time, Mr. Kohli was wearing a black jumper and grey jogging bottoms.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Bramble Way between 6 pm and 6:45 pm on Sunday to come forward.

Detective Inspector Emma Matts, the senior investigating officer, described the circumstances surrounding Mr. Kohli’s death as extremely tragic and upsetting, not just for his family but also for the wider community.

The police are offering support to the family and are maintaining a presence in the area to reassure the community. The family has expressed their gratitude for the public’s kind words and sympathy but has requested privacy during this difficult time.
The investigation into Mr. Kohli’s death is ongoing, with police keeping an open mind as they work to determine what transpired in the park that evening. The scene preservation at the park has now been lifted.

Due to previous contact between the police and the victim, the case has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC). Following further discussions, a mandatory referral has now been made.
