In a horrifying incident, 25-years old Sriram Ambarla, viciously attacked his former partner, stabbing her nine times, including a slash to her throat, at a restaurant in East Ham, London, in March 2022. Just before the assault, he was observed googling 'how to kill someone with a knife' on his phone.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries, undergoing six surgeries and spending a month in critical care in the hospital. Ambarla surrendered to the police after the attack and later confessed to murder and possession of a knife. He was subsequently sentenced to 16 years in prison and prohibited from contacting the victim ever again.

Ambarla and the victim had met while studying engineering in Hyderabad, India, in 2016, but their relationship turned abusive, leading to its end in 2019. Upon moving to the UK in 2022 to study at the University of East London, Ambarla continued to harass and threaten the victim.

Ambarla exerted control over the victim by exploiting a financial debt owed by her brother and pressuring her for marriage. He also blackmailed her, threatening to disclose their past relationship, which her religiously conservative parents disapproved of.

In the days leading up to the attack, Ambarla exhibited increasingly alarming behavior, including visiting the victim's father's home to propose marriage in exchange for clearing the debt. He also made disturbing online searches about murder.

During the attack, Ambarla verbally threatened the victim, demanding marriage, and subsequently stabbed her multiple times, even after she collapsed. The judge condemned Ambarla's actions as terrifying and sentenced him to 16 years in prison for attempted murder and possessing a knife, with the possibility of parole determined by the parole board upon completion of his sentence. Additionally, Ambarla was issued an indefinite restraining order preventing contact with the victim.
