The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a significant breakthrough by apprehending Inderpal Singh Gaba, a key suspect in the violent attack on the Indian High Commission in London that took place in March 2023. The incident unfolded amid protests orchestrated by purported separatists identified as "Khalistanis," outside the High Commission premises.
State-owned news channel DD News disclosed the development via their official social media account, confirming Gaba's arrest in connection with the unlawful activities carried out during the protests on March 22, 2023. The arrest underscores the NIA's ongoing efforts to hold accountable those involved in the assault on the Indian High Commission.
Earlier in April, the NIA had retracted lookout notices issued against three individuals among the 15 initially suspected in the attack. Despite their detention and subsequent investigation, no concrete evidence linking them to the assault was uncovered. Consequently, after deliberation with legal experts and NIA Director-General Dinkar Gupta, the lookout notices against these individuals were withdrawn.
In August 2023, the NIA conducted extensive raids across 31 locations in Punjab and Haryana, aimed at unravelling the conspiracy behind the attack and apprehending the perpetrators and their associates. The operation yielded crucial digital evidence and incriminating documents, shedding light on the identities of the attackers, including Gurcharan Singh and Avtar Singh Khanda, along with their collaborators, both domestic and international.
The March 19 protest, purportedly sparked by India's actions against alleged Khalistani leader Amrit Pal Singh, escalated into the removal of India's national flag from the High Commission premises, triggering widespread condemnation. In response, the Indian government adjusted security measures at the British High Commission and the envoy's residence in New Delhi. Subsequent protests witnessed further tensions, with objects thrown at the High Commission in London.
