India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, will travel to the United States to take part in a Quad foreign ministers' meeting, as New Delhi readies itself to host the upcoming Quad leaders' summit. The meeting, announced by the US State Department, will be hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and will include Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, and Minister Jaishankar.
Scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, this marks the first ministerial-level engagement of the Quad countries since the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. It is also the first such meeting of foreign ministers under the new US administration led by President Donald Trump.
Secretary Rubio’s initial diplomatic activity after taking office on January 21 was to attend the last Quad meeting, which took place the day following the President’s swearing-in. The State Department emphasized that the upcoming session aims to carry forward the momentum established at that gathering and strengthen the collective commitment to a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.
Ahead of his visit, Jaishankar held a phone conversation with Australian counterpart Penny Wong.
Sharing details on X (formerly Twitter), he noted,:
“Had a good discussion this morning with FM @SenatorWong of Australia before we head out for the Quad next week. Exchanged views on our bilateral cooperation and the Indo-Pacific.”
Before traveling to Washington, Jaishankar will stop in New York to inaugurate an exhibition at the United Nations headquarters on Monday. The exhibition, titled "The Human Cost of Terrorism," is organized by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN and seeks to shed light on the worldwide consequences of terrorism. The exhibition’s timing is significant, as it precedes Pakistan taking over the monthly presidency of the UN Security Council.
The Washington meeting is expected to shape the agenda for the upcoming Quad summit to be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit will feature President Trump, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. During a bilateral meeting earlier this year, Modi expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Trump to India for the high-profile gathering.
While recent global attention has been dominated by events in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, a pause in tensions following the Iran-Israel standoff has created an opportunity for renewed focus on the Indo-Pacific. Against this backdrop, the upcoming Quad meeting underscores the group’s continued emphasis on regional stability, especially in response to China’s growing assertiveness.
