Trump Says Modi Agrees to End Russian Oil Imports;

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop importing oil from Russia, as Washington intensifies efforts to curb Moscow’s energy revenues. Trump added that he now plans to push China to take similar action.

India and China are currently the largest buyers of Russian crude, benefiting from discounted prices since Western sanctions followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“I wasn’t happy that India was buying oil,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Prime Minister Modi assured me they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’ll get China to do the same.”

India’s embassy in Washington has not confirmed whether such a commitment was made.

Russia is India’s biggest oil supplier, exporting about 1.62 million barrels per day in September, roughly one-third of India’s total imports. Indian officials have long defended the purchases as necessary for energy security.

Trump’s remarks came days after his nominee for U.S. ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met Modi to discuss defense, trade, and technology. Earlier this year, Trump imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian exports to pressure New Delhi over Russian oil imports.

If India follows through, it could mark a major shift in global energy trade and strengthen Washington’s bid to economically isolate Russia.
