Trump Order New Census

Trump Orders New Census, Aims to Exclude Undocumented Residents, Fueling Redistricting Showdown

US President ‘Donald Trump’ announced on Truth Social that he has ordered the U.S. Department of Commerce to immediately begin preparations for what he calls a “highly accurate” census. This new count, he said, will be based on “modern-day facts and figures” and informed by data from the 2024 presidential election.

A key feature of Trump’s proposal is the exclusion of people living in the United States without legal status. “Those in our country illegally will not be counted in the census,” he declared.

While the practical impact of “modern-day facts and figures” on the overall count remains unclear, removing undocumented residents from the tally would significantly alter the population numbers used for political representation and federal funding. Democrats are expected to challenge the plan, calling it unlawful, discriminatory, and politically motivated.

Trump argues that the census process urgently needs reform, citing serious flaws in the 2020 count. The Census Bureau itself admitted that the last national tally—conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic—contained substantial errors, with eight states overcounted and six undercounted.

This renewed debate comes as political tensions flare in Texas over a proposed redistricting plan that could give Republicans five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. In protest, Democratic lawmakers have left the state, taking refuge in cities like Chicago at the invitation of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker—a potential 2028 presidential contender.

Critics point out the irony of Pritzker’s stance, noting that Illinois is considered one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. In the 2022 elections, Republicans won nearly 44% of the statewide congressional vote but captured only 18% of House seats. Similar disparities exist in California, where GOP candidates garnered about 40% of votes but secured just 17% of congressional districts.

Republican leaders argue that the proposed Texas map would bring the state’s representation in line with Democratic strongholds like California. With Republicans now controlling 23 state “trifectas”—governorship and both legislative chambers—they are positioned to advance redistricting efforts in other states as well. Nebraska and Indiana are reportedly considering similar moves, with Vice President JD Vance recently meeting Indiana Governor Mike Braun and GOP lawmakers to discuss the strategy.
