JD Vance has become known to the American public in various roles: as the author of a memoir detailing the challenges of the White working class, as a newly elected Republican senator from Ohio, and now, as the vice-presidential nominee for his party. Throughout these roles, his wife, Usha, has been a constant presence.
Amidst chants of JD’s name from the Ohio delegation at the Republican convention in Milwaukee, Usha Vance stood beside her husband, applauding as he was nominated by voice vote to be Donald Trump’s running mate.
In a recent interview with Fox News at their home in Ohio, the trial lawyer and former judicial clerk admitted she wasn’t entirely ready to upheave the life she and her husband had established or to endure the ensuing scrutiny. “I don’t know that anyone is ever ready for that kind of scrutiny,” she confessed. The couple found JD’s initial campaign to be a surprising adventure, unlike anything they had experienced before. Despite this, she remained open to the future.
Now, with JD Vance as Trump’s vice-presidential nominee, they are embarking on a journey even more significant than the 2022 Senate campaign. Trump's selection of the young senator, who shares three young children with Usha, has injected the ticket with youthful energy, potentially beneficial in an election cycle characterized by older candidates.
However, JD Vance, who has been in office since January 2023, will likely face questions regarding his political inexperience and his shift from a 2016 Trump critic to a key figure in the MAGA movement. If his Senate campaign is any indicator, Usha Vance may play a subtle but vital role in helping introduce him to the public.
In a 2022 interview with Newsmax, she remarked, “Sometimes people say that he’s changed a lot, but the truth is I’ve known him now for so many years, and he’s always been so true to himself.”
JD Vance has often acknowledged his wife as a crucial part of his success, dating back to their time at Yale Law School. In his 2016 memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," he referred to her as his "Yale spirit guide," praising her for helping him navigate life at the prestigious institution. They married in an interfaith ceremony in Kentucky in 2014—Usha’s family is Hindu, while JD converted to Catholicism in 2019.
Usha Chilukuri Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, grew up in a San Diego suburb. She holds degrees from Yale and the University of Cambridge and has clerked for two Supreme Court justices: Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts..
In 2015, she joined Munger, Tolles & Olson, where she handled complex civil litigation and appeals in various sectors, including higher education, local government, entertainment, and technology. The firm announced her resignation on Monday. “Usha has informed us she has decided to leave the firm,” the company stated. “Usha has been an excellent lawyer and colleague, and we thank her for her years of work and wish her the best in her future career.”
