Swaranjit Singh Khalsa has made history by becoming the first Sikh mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, following his election on November
Khalsa, a Democrat and lifelong public servant, secured approximately 57.25% of the vote, defeating his Republican rival, Stacy Gould.
Biography:
- Swaranjit Singh Khalsa (also known as Singh Swarnjit) is an American politician and community leader, born around 1985 in Jalandhar, Punjab, India.
- He migrated to the United States in 2007 after his family fled the 1984 Sikh violence.
- He holds a master’s degree in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
- Khalsa settled in Norwich, Connecticut, in 2010, where he ran a Shell gas station and built a real estate business.
- He has been deeply involved in civic life, serving on Norwich’s City Council (since 2021), the Board of Education, the Commission on City Planning, the Inland Wetland Commission, and other local bodies.
In 2016, he was awarded the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for his proactive work educating first responders and law enforcement about Sikh culture and religious practices.
