Former Vice President Kamala Harris has stepped back into the national spotlight with strong criticism of President Donald Trump’s economic and political policies. Speaking at a gala event in San Francisco hosted by Emerge America, a group that helps women run for public office, Harris shared her concerns about the direction the country is taking under Trump’s leadership. This was her first major public speech since leaving office in January, and she didn’t hold back.
Harris focused her remarks on Trump’s decision to impose widespread tariffs on imported goods, which she believes are damaging the U.S. economy. She said these tariffs are leading the country toward what she called the “greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history.” According to Harris, the tariffs are causing prices of everyday goods to rise, hurting families, damaging retirement accounts, and forcing businesses to lay off workers. Official data recently showed the economy shrank in the first quarter, adding weight to her concerns.
She also accused Trump of shrinking the federal workforce and acting in ways that challenge American democratic values. Harris warned that the administration’s ongoing battles with the courts could lead to a constitutional crisis. She called Trump a “vessel” being used to carry out a long-standing conservative agenda, rather than acting chaotically or randomly.
Throughout her speech, Harris encouraged Democrats to stay united. She praised lawmakers from across the Democratic Party, including Senators Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders, and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Maxwell Frost, for speaking out with what she called “moral clarity.” Harris stressed the importance of standing together during difficult times and reminded the audience that many Americans are raising their voices against the administration’s policies.
Her remarks also signaled a possible political comeback. After losing the 2024 presidential election, Harris is considering her next steps. She may run for governor of California in 2026, or possibly try again for the presidency in 2028. Her recent appearances and public statements show that she is reentering the political arena carefully and deliberately.
Harris closed her speech with a message of strength and unity: “We are not going to scatter. We are going to stand together, everyone a leader.” Her words aimed to rally Democrats and offer hope during what she sees as a critical time in American history.
