California’s next gubernatorial race is starting to draw attention, with Democratic hopefuls actively campaigning and making appearances at the state party’s annual convention in Anaheim. Yet, one powerful figure was missing: Vice President Kamala Harris. Her potential entry into the race remains the biggest unanswered question — and it’s keeping the rest of the field in limbo.
Harris, a former senator and presidential candidate, has not ruled out a run for governor in 2026. She has set an end-of-summer deadline to make her decision public. Until then, top Democratic donors and strategists are holding back, reluctant to throw their support behind other contenders.
While Harris skipped the event in person, she did appear in a short, pre-recorded message. Still, her absence was noticeable as candidates mingled with over 4,000 delegates, activists, and political influencers. In contrast, her potential competitors were busy networking and raising their profiles.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who ran alongside Harris in 2024, used his speech to openly criticize the party’s missteps. U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey also made an appearance, highlighting the convention’s national importance.
Democratic strategist Derek Humphrey says Harris isn’t under pressure to join the race just yet. “She’s on her own timeline,” he told SFGATE. “She doesn’t need to shake hands or pass out bumper stickers. Her name already carries weight.”
Dan Morain, author of Kamala’s Way: An American Life, pointed out that the race to succeed Gavin Newsom — who is barred from running again due to term limits — is still wide open. Harris, with her name recognition and fundraising ability, is naturally positioned ahead of the pack.
“There’s simply no urgency for her,” Morain said. “Other candidates need to be out there now, making themselves known and bringing in money. That’s not a problem for Kamala Harris.”
Harris’ next move could have a major impact, not just on California politics, but on national Democratic strategy. Whether she sets her sights on the governor’s seat or keeps the door open for a presidential run in 2028, all eyes are on her — and the clock is ticking.
