The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Jay Bhattacharya as the new Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in a closely contested 53-47 vote on Tuesday, March 25. A professor at Stanford School of Medicine, Bhattacharya is known for his expertise in health policy, economics, and medical research.
Bhattacharya has an extensive background in public health and biomedical innovation. He holds senior research positions at the National Bureau of Economic Research and several Stanford institutions, including the Hoover Institution. His research has been widely published, covering topics in medicine, law, economics, and public health.
One of his most notable contributions is co-authoring the Great Barrington Declaration in October 2020, which proposed an alternative approach to COVID-19 lockdowns, advocating for focused protection of vulnerable populations instead.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell praised Bhattacharya’s appointment, highlighting his experience in medical research and leadership abilities. As the new head of the NIH, Bhattacharya will work alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services in February. Their leadership is expected to shape the future of medical research and public health policy in the U.S.
