At that time, all 172 of California’s delegates were pledged to support Donald Trump, as required by state party rules. By July 13, 2016, Trump had secured around 1,542 delegates—well over the 1,237 needed to clinch the Republican nomination. He was officially nominated as the Republican presidential candidate on July 19, 2016.
