NRI Kash Patel as the next FBI director, U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted 48-45 along party lines to advance the nomination of paving the way for a final confirmation vote later this week. Patel, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has been a vocal critic of the FBI and has pledged significant reforms if confirmed.
A former intelligence and Defense Department official under Trump, Patel has vowed to shift the FBI’s focus toward illegal immigration and violent crime—key priorities for Trump’s administration. He has also criticized past FBI investigations into Trump, including probes into Russian election interference, classified document retention, and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Democrats strongly oppose Patel’s nomination, citing his promotion of false claims about voter fraud and allegations against the FBI related to the January 6 Capitol attack. However, Republicans have backed Patel, framing him as a necessary reformer for the agency.
Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Patel’s nomination in a 12-10 party-line vote, setting the stage for a contentious final decision on his appointment.
