NRI Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, has cleared a key hurdle, winning approval from the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee in a 12-10 party-line vote. The decision sets up a full Senate vote, though a date has not yet been scheduled.
Democrats strongly opposed Patel’s nomination, citing his past calls to shut down the FBI’s headquarters and his promotion of conspiracy theories regarding the bureau’s role in the January 6 attack. Concerns have also been raised over allegations that Patel is overseeing a purge of FBI officials linked to investigations into Trump.
Patel has denied any plans for political retribution, but recent Justice Department actions—including the firing of senior FBI officials and demands for lists of employees involved in January 6 cases—have alarmed bureau staff. Two lawsuits have been filed to prevent the release of agents' names, leading to a Justice Department agreement to provide advance notice before any disclosure.
Additionally, ethics watchdogs have flagged Patel’s financial ties to foreign entities, including consulting work for Qatar and stock holdings in Chinese retailer Shein. The nonprofit Public Citizen has urged the Justice Department to investigate whether Patel failed to register as a foreign agent.
Despite these controversies, Republican lawmakers have backed Patel, arguing he has been unfairly targeted. His confirmation vote in the full Senate is expected to be contentious.
