Lord Mayor Sucha Bains, a Sikh, is Coventry's first Asian Mayor, making him Britain's third ethnic Indian mayor

July 25, 2003 (Coventry):

A member of the Labour Party, Bains has worked at resolving the problems of unemployment, immigration and the lack of equal opportunities that face Asians in Britain. He attributes his success to being true to his beliefs.

"My advice to young Indian politicians is not to be opportunists. What your ideas are - stick to them and follow them and do not keep changing parties. If you stick to one party - you will be respected more. One day you will get your reward," said Lord Sucha Bains, Mayor, Coventry.

  •   Mr. Sucha Singh Bains came to England as a 23 year old Sikh from a little village in Punjab in the summer of 1959. Forty-three years later he became a Mayor.
  • Behind the successful man is his wife, Darshan Kaur, who followed Bains soon after his departure from India. And they both feels Asians today are a big part of contemporary British culture.
