Leaked posts from a Tory members-only Facebook group have exposed significant discontent with Rishi Sunak’s performance during the Sky News debate on Wednesday evening.
The Conservative Party Members Group, an exclusive forum for verified members, includes over 3,000 Conservatives, including MPs like Andrew Rosindell, Joy Morrissey, John Penrose, and Virginia Crosby.
Previously, The Independent reported the group’s angry reactions to Mr. Sunak’s ITV debate with Sir Keir Starmer. Now, feedback from the second debate is similarly negative.
Many members expressed disappointment with the prime minister’s performance. One member remarked that while they wanted to support the prime minister, “it is a little too late for the Tories,” and noted that “people generally have had enough.” They also doubted the party's chances of recovery, stating, “voters don’t like the Tories.” Another member concurred, stating, “People are tired of us screwing things up, simple.”
Some members even suggested a leadership change mid-election, amid rumors of Mr. Sunak possibly stepping down. One member suggested, “getting rid of Sunak might even save a few seats,” while another criticized the new Conservative policy on National Insurance, predicting it would lead to “everyone else taxed into oblivion as services collapse.”
When questioned about whether Mr. Sunak had done enough to change their fortunes, members pointed to YouGov polling that showed nearly two-thirds of voters thought Sir Keir performed better. Even the debate audience included disillusioned Conservative members. A former Conservative Association Chair criticized Mr. Sunak over his D-Day actions, declaring herself an “undecided voter” and feeling “ashamed” of his behavior. She accused him of deliberate actions to counter low poll ratings and criticized his conduct during the Covid pandemic, where he received a Fixed Penalty Notice. She commented, “that’s where the trust broke down,” and highlighted the contrast between the Queen’s solitary presence at her husband’s funeral and Mr. Sunak’s attendance at Downing Street parties.
Earlier in the day, members of the Facebook group mocked Mr. Sunak’s chances against Sir Keir, calling the debate “Captain Boring vs. Captain Even More Boring.” One member, a local Conservative candidate, taunted, “What channel will it be on freeview TVs? For those who can’t afford Sky boxes.” Another member blamed Mr. Sunak for the party’s troubles, stating, “All this mess can be laid firmly at his door …Well done Rishi, you might as well have signed that blank cheque yourself.” Another added, “For Starmer, Sunak is the gift that keeps giving!!”
