Labour politician and Chair of the Defence Select Committee, , Tanmanjeet Singh Dheshi highlighted concerns in the House of Commons on January 6 over significant delays and budget overruns in UK defence programmes.

He revealed that only two out of 49 major defence projects for the Royal Navy, British Army, and RAF are currently on schedule and within budget. Addressing the issue in Parliament, he asked what measures the government is taking to address "waste and mismanagement" in the defence system.

While expressing support for prioritising British firms under the Defence Industrial Strategy, Dheshi stressed the need for more concrete actions to improve project delivery.

Defence Secretary John Healey acknowledged the challenges, stating that increased defence spending is necessary to address growing security threats. He pointed out that delays and budget issues were inherited from previous leadership and assured Parliament that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is implementing reforms to improve efficiency and accountability in defence procurement.

At a Defence Select Committee meeting in December, Andy Start, CEO of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), noted ongoing challenges in the defence supply chain due to post-pandemic component shortages and other global disruptions. Despite these hurdles, he maintained an optimistic outlook on overcoming the setbacks.

In Parliament, Patrick Spencer, Conservative MP for Central Suffolk and Ipswich, raised concerns about the UK's defence readiness, urging investments in surface-to-air missiles, hypersonic systems, Dragonfire laser technology, and counter-drone measures.

Healey responded by emphasising the UK's strong NATO defence spending record, asserting that defence investments remain a top priority to ensure the British military stays technologically advanced and combat-ready.
