NRI Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, British Sikh MP, has called on the current Labour government to initiate an independent inquiry into the alleged involvement of Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government in Operation Blue Star. The operation, a military action carried out by the Indian government in 1984 to remove Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, remains a sensitive issue within the Sikh community worldwide.
Dhesi highlighted long-standing concerns over potential British advisory support provided to India during the operation, urging transparency and accountability. Addressing the newly elected Labour leadership, he pressed for a thorough investigation into the extent of Thatcher’s administration’s involvement in the events leading up to the military action.
Lucy Powell, Leader of the House of Commons, acknowledged the significance of the issue to the UK Sikh community and underscored the importance of addressing their concerns.
Over the years, Conservative governments have faced accusations of downplaying their predecessors' advisory role in the controversial operation. Dhesi reiterated the importance of uncovering the truth and fulfilling Labour's pledge to hold an independent inquiry. He stressed that transparency would help resolve the community's unresolved questions and reaffirm the government’s commitment to justice and accountability.
The Sikh community continues to seek clarity on this historical matter, with hopes that an independent inquiry will bring much-needed closure.
